Evaluation of the efficiency of a municipal solid waste sorting plant and assessment of alternative models of urban waste separation

The model analysed in this project aims to improve material recovery efficiency strategies, which can reach up to 75%

For a year and a half, the BETA Technology Centre has been evaluating the efficiency of a municipal solid waste sorting plant, to help assess the options for implementing alternative models of municipal waste separation. The project was commissioned by the environmental activities development branch of the company Urbaser.

The model analysed in this project aims to improve material recovery efficiency strategies, which can reach up to 75%. Within the framework of this agreement, among other things, various options for simplifying separation strategies have been assessed, which at the same time make it possible to achieve a reduction in the content of non-recyclable waste in municipal collection containers. This should facilitate their subsequent treatment and recovery.

The project has been carried out in the context of the European Directive 2008/98/EC, which sets the target of collecting and recovering 75% of packaging from municipal waste by 2020.
