SUSHI-PACK

Sustainable and High Performance Packaging from Seaweed and used Cooking Oils

SUSHI-PACK is a Horizon EIC Pathfinder Open project developing next-generation sustainable packaging from seaweed and recycled cooking oils, bringing together 8 partners across 4 European countries.
  • Grant agreement ID: 101257388

  • Total project budget: 2.999.863,75€

  • Start Date: 01/04/2026

    End Date: 30/03/2030

In 2021, EU waste levels related to packaging soared to 84 million tons, as each European produced nearly 189 kg of packaging waste — a figure expected to reach 209 kg by 2030, if lack of crucial actions. Bringing together a multidisciplinary consortium, SUSHI-PACK addresses the urgent need for sustainable alternatives to fossil-based plastics.

Thus, the project will develop high-performance, bio-based packaging materials inspired by natural plant cuticles and cell walls. These materials will be derived from sustainably sourced seaweed polysaccharides and biobased building blocks obtained from regenerated used cooking oils.

Guided by the Safe and Sustainable Design framework, SUSHI-PACK integrates environmental, regulatory, and societal considerations from the outset. The project will demonstrate materials at Technology Readiness Level 4 and assess their full lifecycle, including compostability, biodegradability, and potential for revalorisation.

To achieve this objective, SUSHI-PACK counts with a Consortium formed by 8 partners, uniting leading academic institutions and industrial partners across Europe.
