Project Summary:
VEHICLE is a Bio–Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) project, under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. The industry consortium aims to widen the business and market opportunities of existing and future biorefineries by demonstrating the valorisation of their low–value sugar streams through several downstream options.
Through joint contributions of the eight partners within the consortium, the VEHICLE project will develop several cross-sectoral interconnections between various hemicellulose-based feedstock producers (specifically pulp mills and biorefinery plants) and process technology developers. Additionally, it will establish nine new bio-based value chains; these include using pulp mill side streams as a raw material source for high-performing polymers with equal or superior performance to incumbents and a range of value chains converting sugar streams into intermediate molecules for producing building block chemicals and compostable polyesters. Finally, VEHICLE project will carry three business cases and deliver several end-products with proven marketability, meanwhile contributing to reach the European commitments on the reduction of CO2 emissions and move towards circular economies.
Our role in the project:
In the framework of VEHICLE, BETA is the leader of the Sustainability Assessment in which environmental, techno-economic and social assessment will be carried out. Full life cycle analysis (including greenhouse gas emissions-Carbon footprint) will be performed as part of this project to create a quantified description of the sustainability of the process, products and value chains.
