Project Summary: 

Currently, the management of livestock waste in Catalonia is mainly divided into 3 main actions: direct application in the field, external management through authorized managers and on-site composting of slurry. Although the treatment of the solid part of the slurry is currently being improved, none of the technologies are aimed at reusing the water, nor do they consider an integral system that values all of the effluents obtained from the “zero waste” concept. This project intends to evaluate the technologies of electrodialysis (ED), ozonisation and composting to treat the effluents obtained in the facilities of treatment of purines by means of NDN. The technological proposal will allow to obtain a compost suitable for use in agriculture and water suitable for use on the farm, either as a cleaning use or as a watering place for the cattle. In addition, the potential application of the concentrate obtained in DE for fertigation will be considered. 

Our role in the project: 

BETA Technological Center will be primarily responsible for carrying out the operation and optimisation of the electrodialysis pilot plant for the treatment of NDN effluent generated in the treatment of pig slurry. In addition, the ozonisation and composting processes will also be carried out in the centre’s facilities to assess the efficiencies of these treatments and thus evaluate the possible end uses of the by-products generated in the treatment of wastewater from the treatment of pig slurry. Finally, BETA Technological Center will carry out the study of the techno-economic viability of the different processes applied throughout the project.
