SURE-AMR is a project that reflects a structural and strategic collaboration to strengthen Ukraine’s R&I ecosystem, support the country’s reconstruction and promote its European integration, while addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a critical public health threat identified by the European Commission and the World Health Organisation.
The conflict in Ukraine has increased the spread of antibiotic-resistant genes and accelerated their spread across Europe, due to an increase in prescriptions to hospitalised patients and the lack of policies to limit their administration to farm animals.
Antibiotics and resistance genes found in livestock manure and used to fertilise fields end up in aquatic systems. Resistance genes are also found in urban wastewater, which is not removed in treatment plants and pollutes rivers and the water in them, eventually reaching homes.
The lack of data on antimicrobial resistance in Ukraine means that monitoring its spread in the country is limited and difficult to assess, and new policies based on scientific evidence and support are needed to address this challenge.
The project aims to raise awareness and inform stakeholders about the challenges of antimicrobial resistance through a One Health approach. In doing so, it serves as a compelling example of how science can act as a bridge for diplomacy and cooperation to address common challenges at both European and global levels, and catalyse progress towards shared goals.
