SEACURE

Innovative solutions to prevent, reduce and remediate nutrient pollution along the land-river-sea system in the Mediterranean basin

The project aims to reduce nutrient pollution in the Mediterranean through innovative solutions for prevention, reduction, and remediation, controlling excess nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil-river-sea system.
  • Grant agreement ID: 101157327

  • Total project budget: 8.513.317,50 €

  • Start Date: 01/09/2024

    End Date: 31/08/2028

The SEACURE project aims to tackle nutrient pollution (nitrogen and phosphorus) in the soil-river-sea system in the Mediterranean, a problem that can lead to eutrophication and severe ecosystem imbalances. Through innovative solutions in prevention, reduction, and remediation, such as precision farming, the use of nature-based technologies like artificial wetlands and floating islands, or biological denitrification, the project seeks to control nutrients from their source to their discharge point into the sea. SEACURE will be implemented in pilot areas in Spain, Italy, and Greece, with the goal of scaling and replicating the results in other regions facing similar issues, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient management of nutrients.
