REAQUA

Innovative strategies for water reuse in the meat industry

sector carni
The project aims to develop a practical guide for the reuse of water recovered in slaughterhouses aimed at the meat sector
  • Total project budget: 173.750,62€

  • Start Date: 01/09/2022

    End Date: 30/09/2024

The main objective of REAQUA is to demonstrate the feasibility of reusing wastewater generated in slaughterhouses, a practice that has significant environmental and economic benefits. With increasing pressure on water resources and stricter regulations, industries are seeking innovative and sustainable solutions to manage their water use. The meat sector is one of the largest water consumers, and its operations generate significant volumes of wastewater, which can be a valuable resource if treated properly.

This project aims to address the challenges and opportunities of water reuse in slaughterhouses by identifying limiting factors that currently hinder the implementation of this practice, evaluating innovative technologies for treatment and post-treatment, and developing guidelines for the reuse of treated water. The project will also assess the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of the proposed solutions to ensure their sustainability and viability.

The specific objectives of REAQUA include analyzing the composition of effluents from cattle and pig slaughterhouses to identify the presence of chemicals and pathogens that may pose a risk to human and environmental health, and evaluate the possible and/or potential risks associated with water reuse. Moreover, the project aims to develop a practical guide for the reuse of water recovered in slaughterhouses aimed at the meat sector, which will provide guidance for the implementation of water reuse practices and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
