MESOCOSMOS

Multiparametric systems based on mesocosms for the assessment of environmental impacts in agroalimentary industries.

Algal communities are easy to grow and monitor. In addition, they respond very quickly to changes in the aquatic environment. It is for this reason that they can serve as sentinels of possible impacts to the aquatic environment.

We are currently experiencing several periods of drought in the country. Climate projections indicate that periods of drought and flow diminution will be more frequent and severe in the near future. The preservation of the quality of our water resources is essential to guarantee the supply of quality water to the population and productive activities. Otherwise, the use of water resources in different sectors implies a decrease in the quality because of chemical and organic substances that industrial and urban wastewater treatment plants cannot always eliminate. In our context, the contribution of waste water effluents to the circulating capacity of rivers can reach 100%, reducing the chemical and biological quality of the receiving system. The MESOCOSMOS demonstration activity proposes a fast, economical and easy-to-handle method that helps the industry to know the possible impact of its effluents on the receiving environment almost instantly. MESOCOSMOS is based on the continuous monitoring of communities of primary producers with non-invasive measurement methods, cost effective and highly environmental relevant.
