MERCAVI
Carbon Market in Vineyards: Evaluation of its Potential in Catalonia

-
Total project budget: 148.543,00 €
-
Start Date: 15/11/2024
End Date: 31/05/2026
Project formed by INNOVI as group coordinator, MASIES D’AVINYÓ, S.L. as leader, Recaredo, and Celler el Miracle as beneficiaries, the BETA TC and the Catalan Institute of Vine and Wine (INCAVI).
The MERCAVI project has as its main objective to generate the maximum possible knowledge from model farms in agricultural landscapes to promote the standardization of the methodologies of the Climate Credit System in Catalonia in the wine sector. Focusing on the regeneration of agricultural soils, it seeks to mitigate the effects of climate change while promoting sustainable and economically viable practices for winegrowers.
Through model farms, the project will analyze regenerative agriculture strategies that increase carbon capture, improve soil health and increase the resilience of vineyards. The transfer of knowledge to farmers and companies is prioritized to ensure the adoption of these innovative practices.
Thanks to this, the MERCAVI project promotes the sustainability and economic development of the sector, positioning Catalonia as a benchmark in carbon agriculture and climate credit markets.
The main objective of the project is to generate as much knowledge as possible from model farms in agricultural landscapes to promote the standardization of the methodologies of the Climate Credit System in Catalonia in the wine sector. The secondary objectives are:
- To evaluate, in model farms, different agricultural practices focused on soil regeneration and the increase in carbon capture in vineyard soils.
- To agronomically evaluate the agricultural strategies implemented in order to infer the impact they have on soil health, crop productivity and system resilience.
- Determine the potential of regenerative strategies to promote carbon agriculture and carbon markets in the Catalan wine sector.
- Promote a holistic knowledge transfer that connects the agricultural sector, businesses and citizens
Project co-financed by the European Union through intervention 7161 of the CAP Strategic Plan (PEPAC) 2023-2027.
