Valorisation of livestock manure by treatment with aquatic plants

Lemna
Phytoremediation is considered an emerging treatment technology in Catalonia, but its application is limited and little explored.
  • Total project budget: 49.973,02€

  • Start Date: 01/07/2022

    End Date: 30/04/2024

There is currently a growing need to improve the management of livestock manure by means of technologies that promote the elimination of nutrients, to prevent pollution but also to promote the valorisation of all available resources.

These emerging technologies must also be economically viable, have a low environmental impact and have a positive social impact. In this context, nature-based solutions, and specifically phytoremediation, is considered an emerging treatment technology in Catalonia, but its application is limited and little explored.

The general objective of this project is to demonstrate the efficiency, in real environmental conditions, of a nature-based solution, specifically a phytoremediation process with the aquatic plant Lemna, which improves the treatment of livestock manure and promotes its recovery, promoting the objectives of the circular economy in the livestock sector and reducing its environmental impacts.

The waste to be treated and recovered in this project by means of the proposed technology is an effluent resulting from NDN treatment in the liquid fraction of pig slurry. As a result of this process, the aim is to obtain regenerated water of sufficient quality for agricultural irrigation or cleaning use on the farm itself, and plant biomass as a nutritional source for the production of animal feed or green manure.

Activity funded through Operation 01.02.01 Technology Transfer of the Rural Development Programme of Catalonia 2014-2020.
