CARBON FARMING MED aims to develop a resilient agricultural system in the Mediterranean and assist farmers in adopting carbon farming as a profitable green business model. The project focuses on optimizing regenerative agricultural and agroforestry practices, promoting a market for carbon credits, and providing tools to facilitate market adoption for both sellers and buyers. Key objectives include establishing a theoretical framework for carbon farming, quantifying soil carbon capture and avoided greenhouse gas emissions, and transferring project results and lessons learned.
The project aligns with the European Climate Law’s goal of achieving climate neutrality in the agricultural sector by 2035, following a water-energy-food security nexus approach. By increasing long-term CO2 capture and storage in ecosystems, CARBON FARMING MED also supports environmental restoration and fair land use for local communities. It aims to create the first platform in the region for buying and selling carbon credits, leveraging existing models and best practices. This cross-border initiative will help the EU achieve climate neutrality by 2050 through enhanced carbon removals.
