The western Mediterranean is experiencing an increase in loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting which corresponds to a process of colonisation of the species in response to climate change. This phenomenon is considered to be of great importance for their survival due to predictions of feminisation and reduced hatchling viability on the original nesting beaches while new nesting beaches present more favourable conditions in a global warming scenario.
However, this colonisation takes place in an area with a high human occupation, such as the Spanish coastline, which is why appropriate management is necessary to favour the success of these clutches in coexistence with the human presence. Unfortunately, the management of this colonisation phenomenon is compromised by a lack of scientific information on the growing population, the suitability of the laying beaches and the effectiveness of the management measures that are being implemented.
In this context, InGeNi-Caretta is a multidisciplinary project with a research team made up of leading sea turtle experts with the aim of generating the scientific knowledge necessary to facilitate decision-making in the planning and management of this endangered species.
InGeNi-Caretta is supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
