The BioTreatED project offers a new concept to mitigate the risks of steroid hormones and hormonally active compounds found in the solid and liquid fractions separated from livestock slurry. The project aims to develop a hormone-degrading microbial consortium and a comprehensive monitoring methodology to protect agricultural and aquatic ecosystems. Seven partner institutions from six countries – Hungary, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Türkiye – are collaborating in this multidisciplinary research, combining their expertise from various scientific fields to improve the safety of irrigation water originating from circular agriculture, thereby enhancing the quality and availability of aquatic ecosystem services.
Project Objectives:
- Monitoring hormonally active compounds found in agricultural slurry and their effects
- Studying the fate of hormonally active compounds in irrigated fields and groundwater under various water flow and soil conditions
- Identifying and selecting microbial strains capable of degrading these compounds
- Developing and validating bio-based methods for the degradation and detoxification of hormonally active compounds
- Evaluating the effectiveness of the targeted treatment through laboratory and field trials
- Engaging stakeholders (farmers, water management actors) and building network
