RUNFASTER4EU

Flagship demonstration of Bio-based value chains for valorisation of sustainable oil crops for marketable applications

runfaster4eu
RUNFASTER4EU will demonstrate the sustainability and replicability at industrial scale of a new value chain focused on the large-scale cultivation of oil crops on marginal lands, avoiding competition with food or feed. These crops will provide vegetable oils and residual biomass for high-value bio-based products in a cascading approach

As Europe advances its green transition, new ways are needed to create high-value bio-based products without affecting food systems or ecosystems. Marginal lands may be part of the solution.

Launched in July 2025, RUNFASTER4EU is a flagship European project transforming marginal lands into sustainable sources of raw materials for cosmetics, bioplastics, bio-stimulants, bioherbicides, dielectric fluids, feed ingredients and NIPU. It focuses on upgrading the Italian flagship plants of Matrìca (Porto Torres) and Versalis (Crescentino), and on large-scale cultivation trials of low-ILUC-risk oil crops like safflower, engaging farmers and validating innovative agronomic practices.

Funded by the Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) with nearly €20 million, RUNFASTER4EU brings together 18 partners from 10 countries to build resilient, circular bio-based value chains across Italy, Greece, Serbia, Spain and Romania—prioritizing soil health, regeneration and the sustainable use of marginal lands.

The project is supported by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking and its members. Funded by the European Union under grant agreement No101214206.
