Reducing Water Consumption in the Agri-Food Sector through Reuse

The main objective of the project is to generate scientific and technical evidence to overcome legislative barriers that currently limit the reuse of regenerated water in the agri-food industry.
  • Total project budget: 202.986,06 €

  • Start Date: 15/11/2024

    End Date: 31/05/2026

This project addresses the urgent need to reduce water consumption in the agri-food industry in Catalonia, especially in the context of the restrictions established by the Special Drought Plan (PES). Despite current efforts to optimize production processes, higher-impact solutions are needed to minimize dependence on conventional water resources. In this regard, the project focuses on recovering high-quality water through the treatment and regeneration of industrial wastewater, enabling its reuse within the same facilities.

The main objective of the project is to generate scientific and technical evidence to overcome legislative barriers that currently limit the reuse of regenerated water in the agri-food industry. To achieve this goal, the project will evaluate the application of innovative technologies based on membrane processes (ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, and electrodialysis) and advanced oxidation processes (ozonation and UV treatment) for treating different wastewater streams. This approach will make it possible to obtain water of a quality comparable to potable water, thereby expanding its potential industrial applications.

The project is coordinated by the Catalan Water Partnership and involves the participation of LA FAGEDA FUNDACIÓ, CORPORACIÓ ALIMENTÀRIA GUISSONA S.A., AGRÍCOLA FALSET-MARÇÀ I S.C. AFALMA SCCL, and ESCORXADOR D’AUS TORRENT I FILLS S.L. This collaboration aims to demonstrate the technical, economic, and sanitary feasibility of reusing regenerated water in the agri-food sector, contributing to sustainability and the industry’s adaptation to climate change challenges.

Project co-financed by the European Union through intervention 7161 of the Strategic Plan for the CAP (PEPAC) 2023-2027.
