Strategies for alternative water resources based on the application of electrodialysis for the treatment of groundwater contaminated by nitrates

Electrodialysis separates ions from water using membranes and an electric field, allowing up to 90% nitrate-free water to be recovered.
  • Total project budget: 100,000 €

  • Start Date: 01/11/2025

    End Date: 30/06/2026

In Osona, many sources exceed the limit of 50 mg/l of nitrates established by the WHO for drinking water. This contamination comes from livestock manure used as fertiliser, which seeps into the soil and reaches aquifers. To find alternative water resources, the BETA TC will test the feasibility of electrodialysis to treat contaminated groundwater. IDAEA – CSIC will also participate by analysing emerging pollutants.

Electrodialysis separates ions from water using membranes and an electric field, allowing up to 90% nitrate-free water to be recovered. The project includes the sampling of different sources in Osona, the treatment of the samples and the analysis of the treated water. Co-financed by the EU, the aim is to obtain water for human consumption, irrigation or industrial uses, maximising the available water resources.
