DEPURHOB
Development of an integrated PPB/HOB system for the valorisation of digestate, CO2 and the production of sustainable fertilisers.
The meat sector is key to the Catalan industrial GDP (representing 21.6%), but the treatment of farm waste has become a major environmental challenge. DEPURHOB project seeks to turn these wastes into business opportunity by valorising the residues from anaerobic digestion using an alternative approach. The proposed solution uses phototrophic bacteria (PPB) to reduce organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus, and hydrogen oxidising bacteria (HOB) to convert the remaining nutrients and the CO2 emitted (after a biogas upgrading process) into valuable biomass. This integrated approach makes it possible to generate a slow-release fertiliser, obtain regenerated water, minimise CO2 emissions and reduce the need for external treatment, thus closing the nutrient cycle.
