The BioBass project will evaluate and optimize, on a pilot scale, the use of artificial ponds as innovative systems for the storage and treatment of raw water. These ponds will serve as water reservoirs for extreme situations, either when the river flow is insufficient for its capture or during torrential rains that alter the quality of the river so much that it is preferable to have better quality stored water. In addition, the ponds will act as a first step in the pre-treatment of captured water and will optimize subsequent purification processes. To enhance the efficiency of this system, the action of the biofilm that promotes the degradation capacity of certain compounds and, therefore, improve the quality of the water entering the ETAP (DWTP, Drinking Water Treatment Plant) will be evaluated. Finally, with the aim of promoting digitalization, the data provided by the quality sensors installed in the river will be included. This information, together with the results of the different studies proposed in this project, will allow the development of a decision-making support system that will help ETAP (DWTP, Drinking Water Treatment Plant) know how and when to use the technologies evaluated in the project.
