The DECOST project organises activities in Vic during the International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW)

Once again, during the first week of May, the International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) was held around the world, an initiative designed to inform and promote the use of compost, and explain where it comes from, how it should be used and what its benefits are.

In Vic, the BETA Technological Centre of the UVic-UCC has organized two activities related to community composting, framed in the implementation of a pilot test of the DECOST project in the neighborhoods of Sant Llàtzer and Quatre Estacions, with funding from the ENI CBC Med programme. This pilot test aims to evaluate the potential of a system of on-site management of the green fraction, based on community composting in these two neighbourhoods, and to check whether it can be a more sustainable solution from an environmental and economic point of view than the current management system.

One of the activities consisted of a practical course on composting for 2nd year secondary school pupils at El Escorial in Vic, combining a theoretical part with a field visit to see first-hand the system implemented in the city of Vic in collaboration with the City Council. Also in Sant Llàtzer, several researchers and those responsible for the DECOST project will be on Friday afternoon at various points in the neighbourhood handing out compost to all users who are participating in the new system, while collecting proposals for future improvements.

ICAW began in Canada in 1995 and over time has spread to other parts of the world, including Catalonia, as more entities, educational centres and organisations join.
