CT BETA participates in the activities of the International Compost Awareness Week in Osona

The technical conference, which took place in Tona, aimed to give visibility to different applications of composting in Catalonia and Osona.

Several representatives of the BETA Technology Centre of the UVic-UCC participated on Tuesday in the technical conference ‘Let’s compost in Osona’, organized by the Mancomunitat La Plana and the Waste Agency of Catalonia in the framework of the International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW). This year, the ICAW is held from 5 to 11 May, a few days in which a large number of entities promote the recovery of organic waste and the benefits of composting around the world.

The technical conference, which took place in Tona, aimed to give visibility to different applications of composting in Catalonia and Osona, presenting experiences in the field of livestock manure management on farms and the organic fraction of municipal waste. In addition, it also included some practical sessions and a visit to the facilities of the Mancomunitat La Plana.

Presentation of the DECOST project

The BETA TC had the opportunity to present the experience of the DECOST project, in which a decentralised community composting system was created as the main method of municipal organic waste management in towns in the Mediterranean region, such as Las Masías de Roda.

In this system, the municipalities and the neighbourhood play a key role in valorising organic waste and giving it an outlet in the form of compost that they can use themselves. Apart from the pilot tests carried out in Osona, the DECOST project has promoted similar community composting experiences in Palestine, Jordan and the Italian region of Basilicata.
