BETA is sponsoring a new edition of the Backyard Ultra Terra Endins Race

Torelló hosted the third edition of the Backyard Ultra Terra Endins Race, a unique endurance event that has been again sponsored by the BETA Technological Centre of UVic-UCC, reaffirming its commitment to the territory and sustainability

The sports area of Torelló has been the venue of the Cursa Backyard Ultra Terra Endins, this Friday, May 1st, starting at 9:00 AM. This race has been once again  sponsored by the BETA Technological Centre of the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC), reinforcing the centre’s commitment to strengthening ties with local stakeholders and promoting healthy habits, outdoor sports, and environmental sustainability.

The race had a total of 220 entries, highlighting its controlled and sustainable nature, and aspiring to establish itself as a leading trail running event in the region. The event is organized by Club Atlètic Natació Torelló (CANT), an organization with a long sporting history in the municipality. The club’s president is Anna Rovira, who also serves as the European project manager for BETA.

An endurance race

The Backyard is a trail running race on mixed terrain, conceived by American Lazarus Lake, with a unique format: runners must complete a 6.706-kilometer circuit every hour. Each lap must be completed in under an hour, and the race continues until only one runner remains capable of finishing a full lap. In this race, there is no podium or traditional ranking; time is not the determining factor, but rather endurance.

The Terra Endins Backyard Ultra Race is an extreme endurance competition that tests the physical and mental limits of the participants”, says Anna Rovira.

The BETA also at the foot of the race

Last year, three members of the BETA team jointly completed 15 laps. Through its support of this initiative and the involvement of its staff, BETA sees the race as an opportunity to strengthen ties with local stakeholders, sports organizations, and other actors in the region.

In this edition, Laura Mejías, PhD in environmental science and technology and coordinator of the Environmental Technologies and Circular Bioeconomy team at the BETA Technological Centre, has run the Backyard race again, thus reinforcing the visibility of the center within a sporting event.

A weekend with a family atmosphere and parallel activities

Beyond the competition, the Torelló Backyard Race is known for creating a family-friendly and community atmosphere in the campsite. During the race, there were raffles, board games, and activities for children and teenagers, as well as food trucks, making the event a sporting celebration open to everyone.

The involvement of sponsors, collaborators and agents of the territory has been key to making the race possible, exemplifying the cooperation between sports entities, institutions and knowledge centers such as the CT BETA of the UVic -UCC.
