The ALGAE-STATE project, developed at CT BETA (UVic-UCC), promotes an innovative microalgae-based biorefinery model to transform agri-food industry by-products into biofertilizers, biomethane, and alternative proteins. Aligned with the objectives of the European Green Deal, the project contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy, and closing carbon and nutrient cycles.
ALGAE-STATE’s strategy combines anaerobic co-digestion with microalgae cultivation, leveraging these microorganisms’ potential to capture CO₂, treat digestates, and generate high-value biomass. Additionally, the project includes experimental activities under real conditions and collaborates with industry stakeholders to maximize its applicability.
This multidisciplinary research opens new perspectives for a sustainable bioeconomy, integrating environmental science, chemical engineering, legislation, and digitalization to overcome technical and social barriers in implementing these emerging technologies.
