Mitigation of emissions from on-farm composting

Development of a guide for selecting mitigation methods that harmonises and facilitates their implementation in livestock manure composting.

The project focuses on proposing, comparing and demonstrating different strategies for mitigating gas emissions produced during the manure composting process.
  • Total project budget: 99.707,91 €

  • Start Date: 15/10/2024

    End Date: 15/10/2026

Composting is a widely known, easily applicable and affordable technology used to manage a wide variety of waste streams, including those from the agricultural and livestock sectors.

Despite its benefits, the process can generate polluting gas emissions and unpleasant odours. Although there are several proposals to mitigate these, there is currently no clear approach to identifying the best alternatives in terms of mitigation efficiency by pollutant type, economic feasibility, or odour generation.

Therefore, we propose the development of a guide for selecting mitigation methods that harmonises and facilitates their implementation in livestock manure composting, thus improving the sustainability of the process and its perception by society. In addition, this tool will allow the use of composting to be aligned with the best available techniques, reduction of gaseous emissions and sustainable development objectives.
