Within the framework of the project European NUTRI-KNOW, the BETA Technological Centre, has produced several documents with recommendations for policymakers to improve sustainability regulations in the agricultural sector. These documents, known as policy briefs aim to improve sustainability regulations in the agricultural sector. The project synthesizes scientific evidence and practical experience to guide future policy decisions at the European and regional levels. This work has been developed throughout the project and is particularly reinforced in its final phase during 2026.
The policy briefs NUTRI-KNOW translates research and innovation results into messages. These documents, which are clear and actionable for policymakers, identify areas where current regulations may limit the adoption of sustainable solutions that have already been technically and scientifically validated. In fact, the project has not only generated recommendations but has also initiated outreach and advocacy efforts with various policymakers and advisors at the European level.
The first policy brief addresses circular fertilization (RENURE), which promotes the safe use of nutrients recovered from livestock manure as an alternative to conventional mineral fertilizers. Despite existing scientific evidence, its application is still hampered by various regulatory interpretations. This limits its potential to reduce nitrate pollution and advance towards a more circular nutrient management system.
The second document focuses on small scale anaerobic digesters, a mature technology that allows the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, improved manure management, and the generation of bioenergy on farms. The NUTRI-KNOW project highlights that, despite the proven environmental benefits, administrative and regulatory procedures remain a significant barrier to their implementation.
The third document analyses the cultivation of microalgae as a sustainable protein source, an emerging option with high potential to diversify food production and reduce pressure on traditional agricultural resources. The document highlights the need for public policies that support research, innovation, and market development to facilitate its growth.
Sustainability Governance team at the BETA Technological Centre, and especially through its Science4Practice line, has actively participated in the development of these policies Briefs. Based on this work, the centre plans to strengthen dissemination and policy advocacy actions also at the Catalan level, in collaboration with institutional actors and the agri-food sector, to adapt the recommendations to the regulatory and territorial context of Catalonia.
This work will culminate with the final event of the NUTRI-KNOW project at the end of April within the framework of the European Sustainable Nutrient Initiative (ESNI).
