Cárol Sierra-Durán is a biologist and PhD researcher in the BiBio Research Group at the BETA Technological Centre. She specialises in bat ecology and conservation, with research focused on understanding the relationship between bats and agroecosystems, particularly their role as natural biological pest control agents in agricultural landscapes.

Her work explores how bat biodiversity influences agricultural production and, in turn, how farming practices shape bat communities. To address these questions, she combines a range of methodological approaches, including bioacoustics, ecological monitoring and metabarcoding analysis. She also works closely with farmers and other local stakeholders to develop effective conservation strategies in agricultural environments.

International collaboration is a key aspect of her career, and she has participated in research projects across Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. She currently coordinates the international Global South Bats network and is a National Geographic Explorer.
