FRENAWASTE

Freshwater biota as a technology in nature for circular wastewater treatment

FRENAWASTE will improve wastewater treatment (WWT) by replicating natural processes to reduce its environmental impact. It will develop innovative technology to remove pollutants and valorise biomass.
  • Total project budget: 231,250.01€

  • Start Date: 01/09/2023

    End Date: 31/08/2027

The FRENAWASTE project aims to improve wastewater (WW) treatment by replicating natural processes to reduce its environmental impact. Although AR treatment has advanced, effluents continue to pollute aquatic ecosystems. FRENAWASTE will develop an innovative, circular and cost-effective technology for AR treatment plants, using artificial ecosystems to remove pollutants and recover valuable products.

The objectives of the project include improving effluent quality, reducing environmental impact, complying with water reuse regulations and valorising the collected biomass to produce agronomic products and biogas. FRENAWASTE will be implemented in a pilot plant, following five phases: laboratory optimisation, operational demonstration, quantification of ecological impacts, evaluation of biomass valorisation and sustainability analysis.

The project will generate knowledge on how to apply natural processes to minimise ecological impacts and chemical risks of RA effluents. It will promote the circular economy and sustainability in the wastewater treatment sector,  and support the transition towards a more sustainable circular bioeconomy.
